Essay Critique Guidelines

Although you may not be a writing expert, you are THE reader of this essay and your response is a valid one. I have found that almost every reader, regardless of experience, can identify the primary strength and weakness in an essay.  In the end, you will find that providing a honest critique of your partner's essay will help you master your own.  Please comment freely and respectfully. Keep in mind that it is better to begin by noting the strengths of the essay before pointing out the areas that need improvement.
  Content:
  • Does the introductory paragraph specifically answer or address what the prompt is asking?
  • What specific examples does the author give in his/her paper that speak to the prompt?
  • What are the supporting details?
Organization
  • Does the essay have a clear introduction and conclusion?
  • Does the introduction and conclusion refer to the same idea?
  • How is the essay structured (how many paragraphs, etc)?
  • Are individual paragraphs are organized (clear topic sentences, appropriate and concrete evidence, logical organization of evidence)?
Style:
  • What is the tone of the essay (humorous, serious, reflective, satirical, etc.)?  Is this appropriate?
  • Does the essay have sufficient creativity?
  • Are sentences are worded clearly?
  • Are word choices interesting and appropriate?
Correctness:
Does the essay have correct grammar and punctuation?

Example #1 : Rolling around in the bottom of the drawer, Tim found the missing earring. [certainly the earring was rolling, not Tim!]

Example #2:The new manager instituted several new procedures some were impractical
[You could also easily tell that the following sentence actually contains two sentences that need punctuation between them]

In addition to the questions above, answer the following questions...
1.  Give two suggestions to your partner for organizing the essay, such as focusing in on one event rather than many, providing more background, turning explanation into action, etc.?

2.  Give two suggestions to your partner on how they could help you to feel the emotions in the paper, rather than them just describing/writing them.

3.  How does the essay reveal a significant aspect of the writer’s personality?

Writing an Essay for College - AVID IV Class 8/4/15

This year the Common App changed its essay prompts for students. Here they are (the italics come from the Common App).  Choose one topic and work on the first draft of your college essay for 30 minutes.  E-mail your first draft to Mrs. Taylor by Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

1.      Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2.     The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3.     Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

4.     Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5.     Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community or family.
