The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program

The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program of the National Science Foundation provides funding for Catawba College's Noyce Scholars program. Noyce Scholars receive $18,000 a year for two years in addition to any academic scholarship awarded by Catawba. The Noyce Scholarship would be the largest individual scholarship available to students, making it a significant incentive for students to pursue a career in STEM education.

Students will be selected to receive scholarships based on strong academic performance and compatibility for a career in teaching. Upon selection, students receiving scholarships will be required to sign an agreement to complete a major in a STEM discipline and complete the teacher education program to gain licensure. Students must also agree to work for two years in a high-needs school district for every one year of scholarship support.

Noyce Scholars at Catawba are provided a variety of exciting benefits that include a major in a STEM discipline, a minor in secondary education, a mentoring program with an exceptional practicing teacher, a paid summer internship in an industrial or academic laboratory, travel to professional conferences and workshops, and continued support after graduation. Noyce Scholars will also participate in a leadership retreat designed to encourage retention and excellence in the program. The 2013/2014 Noyce Scholars will be going on a team-building adventure to Atlanta from September 18-22, 2013 to build a supportive community within the cohort and for exposure to alternate forms of teaching outside of a classroom.

Eligibility criteria will conform to National Science Foundation specifications, including:
-
Junior or senior standing at time of receipt of scholarship
-
Minimum GPA of 2.75
-
Declared major in a STEM discipline
-
Completion of the introductory sequences in a STEM major
-
Grade of C or higher in Advanced Academic Writing or equivalent course
